Students at the National Center for the Study of the Dead are learning how to play the music of the Indian subcontinent’s greatest musical artists.
The center has a permanent collection of thousands of pieces of Indian music, many of which were recorded in India and circulated widely in the country.
It also has a long-running residency program for young Indian musicians who want to perform in the U.S. The program has a $20,000 budget, but students are free to play anywhere in the world.
This year, about 100 students from the center took part in a program titled Dead in Music.
Students were asked to write a paper explaining their music tastes and perform them on the program’s stage.
The pieces were played in a variety of settings and styles.
The performances were performed by the center’s own musicians, who had never played in person before.
“I am a big fan of Indian pop and I have always been interested in how to find music in my home,” said Nalini Pramukhwar, a first-year student at the center.
“I have always wanted to learn how to write music and how to use different instruments to create a variety.”
After the class, students were given headphones and asked to record the sounds of their compositions on their phones.
They then sent those recordings to the center and put them on a CD that students could play on their iPhones.
“It is a fun way to learn music, and the center has this collection of recordings that are very good quality,” said Durga Ramachandran, a second-year musician who plays in a band.
“They really put a lot of time and effort into it.”
Raju Varma, the center director, said the program helps students to find their own identity.
“There are many ways to explore the world, but it is also important to be comfortable and able to take risks,” he said.
“These students have a lot to learn and they are learning from the best in the region.”
The program is one of the few that focuses on students from India, which has a population of just over 3 million.
The center also offers classes in other Indian music styles, including Indian pop.
Rajamul, who is studying music in New York, said he is excited to get started and start recording his own music.
“This is a wonderful experience for me and it will help me develop and develop more as a musician,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
“Music has been a big part of my life and I am very grateful for the opportunity to have a chance to work with someone who has so much passion for music.”
